Szczesny Explains Penalty Save Against Spezia

Szczesny Explains Penalty Save Against Spezia

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has explained his penalty save in Juventus’ 3-0 win over Spezia in the Serie A on Tuesday.

The Poland international also warned his team-mates to improve in order to play very well for 90 minutes.

After a 1-1 draw at Hellas Verona last weekend, Andrea Pirlo’s side were hoping to get back on track with a win against Vincenzo Italiano’s men at the Allianz Stadium. The Bianconeri could not break the deadlock in the first half despite having nine shots.

Alvaro Morata finally got the breakthrough for the hosts on 62 minutes before Federico Chiesa doubled their advantage nine minutes later.

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo got the third and that was enough to settle Spezia’s twelfth defeat of the season.

Andrey Galabinov had the chance to pull one back for the visitors during the dying embers of the game but his effort was saved by Szczesny.

“I expected him to take a fairly central penalty, so it was I guess quite an easy save,” the former Arsenal goalkeeper told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

The 30-year-old was seen shouting at his teammates even when Juventus were 2-0 up, as Spezia had a period of pressure.

“It was crucial we understood the importance of the moment. Even 1-0 or 2-0 is not a guarantee, so we had to keep on our toes and avoid conceding a goal that could’ve changed the game. I wanted to keep my teammates alert.

“Our second half was good, the first had a really slow tempo. It was also credit to Spezia for playing well, but we certainly need to improve so that we can play well for 90 minutes and not just 30.

“We definitely need to improve. We’re aware that we went through a rough period, but we play every three days and we need to understand the importance of this moment.”
